Why Resistance Training is Important for Everybody

There are a lot of myths when it comes to lifting weights and what it does for an individual. Let's bring up some myths. It's going to make you big and bulky.  This does not happen because if that was possible then every man would easily be big and bulky. The body does not function in that way.   That is just one of many myths but what does lifting really do for you?

Let's start with the mental piece.  When you start resistance training you get stronger and when you get stronger you get more confident. The brain and physical body work together.  When you feel stronger you will be mentally stronger.  This is why I have had both men and women work on resistance training and you see it affect their everyday life. They become confident at work and even when they go out with friends. Lifting raises the testosterone signal, which helps boost energy too. That all being said, you will not get big and bulky.

The next thing I want to talk about is that you will help build a better life into older age because of bone and muscle health.  Muscle moves bones and when we compress bone, new bone tissue grows. This is important to prevent arthritis and osteoporosis. Your body has the capability to heal itself.  By moving and putting resistance on the body, the body will build bone and muscle tissue. This is why you will see healthy and older individuals being able to move well.

After having better bones and muscle tissue to move the body better, you can use resistance training to correct pain. Done properly you can make your body feel better. It’s amazing; at the end of a training session clients will leave saying they feel better. Why is that? It’s not only the mental piece but physically we are putting them in a better posture. When you are in a better posture, pain signals throughout the body will diminish. Where people go wrong many times with resistance training is going too hard and causing pain. Resistance training used properly is body building and not a way to tear your body down.

One of my favorite parts of resistance training is being able to build muscle and have better insulin sensitivity. This means you will have a better ability to handle carbohydrates better. More muscle means more calories you will need to keep your body. This is a benefit in today’s time where we are sitting down all day. This means our body uses more calories without us doing work. Resistance training gives you the capability to do this. I will give you a perfect example: when marathon training, many people think to eat a lot of calories but the average is typically around 1700 at most but now add resistance training and the average is about 2500 calories. This is a big advantage when we have to sit down and look at the computer all day.

At the end of the day resistance training should be part of your routine 2 days a week if not more depending on the goal. Many people focus on just how it makes you look but it does so much more than that. It helps you mentally, with longevity and being able to handle food much better.
