Why Science is confusing
The reason science is confusing within the fitness space is because people swear that their way will change everything. We all have biases, believe it or not. Doctors and researchers are biased just like you and me, but this is where learning how to be mindful and read in between the lines helps. Be careful who you follow and know the information. Make sure the information is valid for you.
Also, fitness studies are 8-12 weeks long, which really is not a long time. There’s a lot of wiggle room for life. For example, when developing muscle, it is shown that the 8-12 rep range builds the most muscle. But is this true? Think about powerlifters who do heavy weights may hit 1 or 2 reps in a set, yet these guys are big. So, does that mean you need to lift heavy to get big. Not necessarily because some bodybuilders do high reps and tons of volume work. Therefore, it can get confusing. They don’t break down the one reality in the study. Just by getting stronger in each rep range will typically get you muscle. Another problem with studies is they are typically full of young men ages 18-24. They are the ones doing the studies because they are the easiest group to get. Let’s take fasting and its wonderful qualities. Yes, fasting is great for blood work, and controlling calorie consumption, but it can be harmful to a woman who are in the reproductive cycle of their life. It could cause harm to hormones and other factors in the body. But Since it’s a study that is done on young men, we don’t know the long-term ramifications for women who are not in a controlled study.
Since studies are controlled, we don’t get to see how things are implemented in life. Life is changing all the time. There will be stressful times in life and there will be down time in life. Using science is great but it is also great to have coaching to get you to the next level. We are not a subject in a controlled study but a human performing in real life, so the next time you see a study or article figure out how this breaks down for you. I’m not saying these studies are useless, they do help guide us toward the goal. What’s important for the average person is to figure out how you will manipulate it for your life. Just like calorie counting works for some people while others will fail because of mental anxiety. It’s ALL based on the INDIVIDUAL!!!!!
I can go on and on about why science is confusing but here are some things to think about when reading about the new fad or this is what research is showing
Think
WHAT CAN I DO CONSISTENTLY?
HOW CAN I MANIPULATE THIS STUDY OR ARTICLE IN MY FAVOR?
ITS OK TO NOT BE PERFECT
WHAT CONCEPTS DO I NEED TO UNDERSTAND
